As a long-time healthy food blogger, I’ve watched trends come and go, but green juice remains consistently popular. Buying fresh cold-pressed juice can be expensive, and many people don’t own a juicer. Fortunately, most households have a blender—and a blender plus a little straining can give you authentic green juice without the cost or cleanup of a juicer.

Making this green juice at home lets you:

  1. Save money compared to store-bought juices.
  2. Avoid buying or cleaning a juicer, which can be time-consuming.
  3. Enjoy the concentrated vitamins and minerals found in juice when the pulp is removed.

The Benefits of Green Juice

Juicing removes most of the insoluble fiber so your body can more quickly absorb vitamins and minerals from fresh vegetables and fruit. That doesn’t mean pulp is bad—fiber is important—but juice is a convenient way to get a dense dose of nutrients. Different greens and fruits offer different benefits; rotate ingredients like kale, spinach, cucumber, and apple to get variety in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

What Type of Blender Should I Use?

A high-powered blender with strong blades makes this process easiest. Models like Blendtec or Vitamix (and other quality high-speed blenders) break down fibrous vegetables quickly. Some blenders even have a “juice” setting. If you don’t have a high-powered model, you can still use a regular blender—just blend a bit longer and add enough water to help the mixture move.

Green juice ingredients

Ingredients in Green Juice

  • Kale – Rich in vitamins A, C, and K and folate.
  • Celery – Contains antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Cucumber – High water content and provides potassium plus vitamin C and K.
  • Green apples – Add sweetness and supply vitamin C and potassium.
  • Ginger – Adds a spicy note and anti-inflammatory benefits.

How To Make Green Juice In Your Blender

The key to making real juice in a blender is straining out the pulp after blending. If you prefer to keep the pulp, you can drink it like a smoothie, but for classic juice follow the steps below.

In short:

Chop ingredients, blend with water, then strain the blended mixture through cheesecloth (or a nut milk bag) into a bowl. Squeeze to extract the liquid and discard or repurpose the remaining pulp.

Storage Instructions

Fresh blender green juice is best consumed immediately to capture maximum nutrients and flavor. If needed, store in a sealed jar or mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Separation is normal—shake before drinking. The leftover pulp can be added to soups, baked goods, or smoothies, or dehydrated for later use, though its texture is quite moist.

Don’t have a juicer? No problem! You can make green juice in your blender in minutes with a high-speed blender and cheesecloth.

  • Author: Davida Lederle
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 1 juice
  • Category: Juice
  • Method: Blend
  • Diet: Vegan

Ingredients

  • 1 head of kale, stemmed and coarsely chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 cucumber, coarsely chopped
  • 2 green apples, cored and coarsely chopped
  • 1 inch cube fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
  • 2 cups water
  • Supplies: a powerful blender, several pieces of cheesecloth or a nut milk bag, a large bowl.

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in your blender and add 2 cups of water.
  2. Blend on the juice setting if available, or blend for about 1 minute in a regular high-speed blender until smooth.
  3. Layer several pieces of cheesecloth over a large bowl so the cloth covers all sides.
  4. Pour the blended mixture slowly into the center of the cheesecloth-lined bowl.
  5. Gather the edges of the cheesecloth and squeeze firmly to extract the juice. You should be left with a mound of vegetable pulp.
  6. Pour the strained juice into a glass and enjoy immediately.

Tips: You can add the pulp to soups, baked goods, or smoothies, or discard it. If you use a regular blender, blend a bit longer and add more water if needed so the blades can process the mixture.
