I recently baked a loaf using Prepared Pantry’s New England Soup & Sandwich Bread Mix. Prepared Pantry describes it as “almost white bread, a moist bread, that is made with just enough whole grains to make a delightful bread.” The mix is multigrain and you can see the grains in the blend.

The package specifies adding water at 80°F. I use a Zojirushi bread machine with a preheat cycle, so I simply add room-temperature water. The mix calls for three tablespoons of butter; following my machine’s instructions, I cubed the butter and placed it in the corners of the bread pan so it softened during the preheat.

After a few minutes of kneading, check the dough. You should see a smooth, round ball of dough. If it seems too dry, add liquid a teaspoon at a time until it forms a ball. If it looks too wet, add flour a tablespoon at a time until it reaches the expected consistency.

Do I Recommend This Mix?

The finished loaf looked attractive and rustic.

The texture was firm, moist, and hearty. Although my partner typically dislikes wheat bread and worried this would taste like a heavy wheat loaf, we both agreed it did not have an overt wheat flavor.

However, we both noticed a slight floury taste. It wasn’t unpleasant, and we still enjoyed the bread overall, but that subtle flour flavor was noticeable and a bit odd.

Because of that lingering flour flavor, I cannot fully recommend this mix despite the great texture and the attractive loaf.

My Favorite Bread Mixes

Below are two Prepared Pantry mixes I buy repeatedly and recommend.

Prepared Pantry New York Dill Rye Mix

New York Dill Rye

This mix gives off a dill-and-onion aroma—almost like sour cream and onion chips—which is delightful while baking and in the finished loaf. The flavor and scent make it a standout.

Prepared Pantry Black Russian (Pumpernickel) Bread

This mix produces a dense, rye-forward aroma while baking and a final loaf with a pleasantly cake-like texture. It’s one of my go-to mixes for a rich, flavorful bread.
