Spiced Pear and Apple Sauce Recipe for Fall

This season is one of our favorites for many reasons. Mostly because homemade pear-apple sauce tastes far better than anything you can buy, and it’s simple and budget-friendly when fruit is in season or on sale. Our spiced pear and applesauce is fragrant, naturally sweet, and full of fresh flavor—perfect for breakfast, snacks, or to serve with a meal.

Why make this homemade apple pear sauce?

Making sauce at home lets you control sweetness, spice, and texture. Ripe pears add a floral, buttery sweetness that elevates classic applesauce. When apples or pears are a bit overripe, they’re actually ideal here: they cook down fast and develop richer flavor. Combine pears and apples in any ratio you prefer—the softer and riper the fruit, the better the result.

Can I Freeze Apple Sauce or Pear Sauce?

Yes. Cool the sauce, then portion it into freezer-safe containers, plastic bags, or ice cube trays for smaller portions. Properly stored, sauce keeps 6–8 months in the freezer, though it’s best used sooner. Thaw in the refrigerator and stir before serving. This makes a great snack or easy meal addition for kids and seniors—soft, nutritious, and flavorful.

Use ripe, soft pears and apples for the best flavor and texture. Even slightly mealy apples are fine if they still taste good—those will break down quickly during cooking.

This recipe is based on about 3 pounds of fruit (we like 2 lb pears to 1 lb apples), but you can use all pears, all apples, or any ratio you prefer. Makes roughly 1 quart.
