How to Make Homemade Applesauce from Fresh Apples

This is a classic English recipe for homemade applesauce, traditionally served alongside roast pork. Made from simple ingredients, it’s easy to prepare from scratch and contains no unnecessary additives. Omit the butter if you prefer a lighter, everyday applesauce.

You can make the applesauce as smooth or as chunky as you like.

Ingredients
  • 500
    g
    (1 lb) apples
    cored and quartered
  • 30
    g
    (1 oz) sugar
  • optional: 40 g (1.5 oz) butter
and spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg, to taste
Instructions
  1. Place the cored and quartered apples in a medium pot. Add about 1/2 inch (roughly 1–2 tablespoons per 500 g apples) of water to the bottom to prevent sticking.
  2. Cover and cook over medium heat until the apples are soft and easily pierced with a fork, checking occasionally. If the water evaporates before the apples are tender, add a few more tablespoons as needed.
  3. Remove the pot from the heat. Mash the apples by hand for a chunky sauce or use a blender/immersion blender for a smooth texture. Stir in the sugar and, if using, butter and a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg. Return to low heat and stir until the sugar dissolves and the butter melts.
  4. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice as desired. Serve warm or chilled. This applesauce pairs particularly well with pork roast but is also great on its own.
